Expert Reviews & Guides for Canadian Outdoor Play
Somewhere between “can we get a trampoline” and “can we get a dog,” most Canadian parents eventually hear the third request: “can we build a rock wall on the swing set?” It’s a good one, honestly — a lot better than the dog. Rock climbing holds for kids playset builds are one of the cheapest, … Read more
Somewhere between the swing set catalogue and the “how much yard do I actually have” math, most Canadian parents land on the same fork in the road: monkey bars vs climbing frame for backyard play. It sounds like a small decision. It isn’t, really — one option asks for a narrow strip of lawn and … Read more
Here’s the thing nobody tells you at the garden centre: most swing sets are designed for yards that don’t actually exist anymore. The classic North American backyard — the quarter-acre with a sprawling lawn — has been quietly shrinking for two decades, especially in and around Canadian cities where townhouses, infill lots, and narrow rear … Read more
Somewhere around the third “I’m bored,” most Canadian parents start eyeing that blank stretch of backyard fence or that awkward basement corner and wondering if there’s a better answer than another screen-time negotiation. A backyard slide for toddlers is a small-scale, low-height play slide — usually one-piece moulded plastic — sized for children roughly 1 to 4 years old, built with a shorter climb, a wider base, and a gentler incline than anything designed for bigger kids. That’s the short version. The longer version is a lot more interesting, and it’s the reason so many Canadian … Read more
Somewhere between “let’s get some fresh air” and “I need twenty quiet minutes to drink a coffee that’s still hot,” a climbing fort with slide earns its keep. It’s the rare backyard purchase that pays for itself in Saturday mornings and quiet weeknight suppers where nobody asks to look at a screen. But scroll through … Read more
Standing in your backyard on a Saturday morning, coffee in hand, staring at the sad patch of grass where a swing set used to be — that’s usually the moment the wooden vs plastic playhouse for kids question stops being theoretical and starts being urgent. A playhouse is, at its core, a small freestanding structure … Read more
Somewhere between “let’s build a blanket fort” and “can we get a real one,” most Canadian parents hit the same wall: the backyard has room, the kids have imagination, and what’s missing is a structure that can actually survive a Saskatoon winter or a Halifax nor’easter. A wooden playhouse for backyard use is, at its … Read more
